Star Citizen continues to rake it in, crowdfunding passes $350 million milestone

Star Citizen has hit yet another milestone. Despite the pandemic, 2020 was the game's most successful year to date, with the total amount of crowd funding now exceeding $350 million.

Star Citizen's funding tracker now shows that Cloud Imperium Games has raised $351,202,192, with that funding coming via three million players. If we pull back and look at Star Citizen over its eight year crowd funding run, the game will has made roughly $43 million per year since announcement.

Part of this funding push has come from Cloud Imperium Games' free access period. In November last year, the game was free to download and play for two weeks, which led to a $17 million boost in crowd funding.

While Star Citizen continues to rake it in, there is still plenty of confusion around the game's release date. At this point, there is no target window for the ‘launch' version of Star Citizen, or its single-player counterpart Squadron 42.

Star Citizen is currently in alpha version 3.12 and is expected to reach version 3.16 before the end of this year.

KitGuru Says: Star Citizen continues to impress on the crowd funding side, but there is still a lot of work to be done on the actual game. Have many of you backed Star Citizen at some point over the last eight years? What do you think of the game so far?
