Outriders launches as one of the biggest games on Steam

As a brand new IP, it was difficult to estimate how successful Outriders would be at launch, even after the game’s very successful demo. Fortunately, now we have some hard data to look at and so far, Outriders is doing a lot better than Square Enix’s previous online co-op attempt.

People Can Fly’s looter shooter has already become one of the biggest co-op game launches on Steam, topping 100,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. It is also one of the top-selling games on Steam. By comparison, as pointed out by Eurogamer, Square Enix published Marvel’s Avengers last year, which debuted at a peak concurrent player count of 28,145 players at launch and has dwindled down to just 1000 concurrent players in the last 30 days.

Of course, the Outriders launch was not without its problems. Like Marvel’s Avengers, there were day-one issues with Square Enix’s log-in authentication systems, making it difficult for players to get into the action at times. Some players also found themselves booted from the game due to crashes at points.

At the moment, People Can Fly is working on addressing these issues and the game should have better server stability this week. Perhaps the day-one Xbox Game Pass launch mixed with the long weekend for Easter caused a bigger spike in day-one players than anticipated, even after the success of the demo.

KitGuru Says: It’s a shame that server issues persisted at launch but People Can Fly seem to be quite open with the community, so I think players will end up sticking around. Have any of you played Outriders over the weekend? What did you think of the game?
