Spider-Man: Miles Morales update adds realistic muscle deformation to suits

Since its release in November, Insomniac Games have been updating Spider-Man: Miles Morales with a number of new and experimental features. Previously, they added a 60fps mode which included ray-tracing, giving players the best of both worlds. In a surprise update, certain suits from the game will now feature “realistic muscle deformation.”

Following the announcement of a surprise new suit to the game, Insomniac Games revealed that certain suits would see realistic muscle deformation on PlayStation 5.

When asked to clarify what this meant, one developer said “We've fully simulated the entire character from the inside-out, using techniques previously only available in film. Every deformation that you see on the surface of the costume is the result of muscle and cloth simulation.”

Despite not being a live-service title, it is interesting to see Insomniac Games experiment with new technologies, adding them to pre-existing games. This bodes well for the future of the studio and its games.

Following the recent update to 2016’s Ratchet and Clank which added a 60fps mode on PS5, it is clear that Insomniac Games puts a lot of love into its games, continuously trying to make the experience better for its fans. It will be interesting to see how this technology is used in future titles.
