Naughty Dog reportedly remaking The Last of Us for PS5

As games get older, publishers will often look back to previous generations to see which titles could use a new coat of paint. In such instances, classic titles may receive remakes, rebuilding the entire game from the ground up. Such is the case with the PS3 classic The Last of Us, which is reportedly being developed for PS5.

In an article by Bloomberg detailing the inner workings at PlayStation and the company’s philosophy to game releases, Jason Schreier revealed that a remake of the 2013 classic The Last of Us is in development.

According to Schreier, a new development team was set up with the intention to remake Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us for the PlayStation 5. However, this project later took a turn with Sony having “moved ownership of the The Last of Us remake to its original creator, Naughty Dog.”

Currently, it has been officially confirmed that Naughty Dog is developing a multiplayer ‘Factions’ game for The Last of Us Part II. Beyond that however, little is known about what the team is working on.

While The Last of Us was a technical showcase at the time, and still holds up to this day, the game’s sequel introduced so much more, both graphically and gameplay wise. Though it may seem a little soon for The Last of Us to get a remake, it wouldn't be the only PS3 game to have done so. Demon’s Souls most recently received a complete remake, and NieR: Replicant is getting a pseudo-remake later this month.

With how well regarded The Last of Us is, it will be interesting to see what fan reception will be to this remake, even if it is made by Naughty Dog themselves.
