Valve announces Steam Open World Sale event for May

Over the last few years, developers from Valve's SteamWorks forum have regularly leaked upcoming sales dates. Now, Valve is done trying to hide upcoming sales and is announcing them publicly ahead of time. This all starts with the “Steam Open World” sale, which will take place next month.

In a Steam announcement post, Valve announced that it is planning “a multi-day eveny celebrating games featuring the popular open world mechanic”. This sale will be taking place between the 27th and 31st of May.

Valve is inviting developers and publishers to register for participation, allowing them to set discounts for the time period. Interestingly, we get to see some of Valve's requirements for a sale like this too, with the Steam team mandating that Steamworks developer accounts be in good standing, games submitted for the sale must be tagged “Open World” or “Open World Survival Craft”.

Aside from that, all a developer needs to do is ensure the game they want to discount was released on Steam before the 27th of May and that the discount stays in place for the duration of the event.

KitGuru Says: Steam sale dates have been leaking early for years, so it just makes sense for Valve to be a bit more public about it. Are there any open world games you'll be looking to get your hands on during the sale?
