Nintendo wants to focus more on developing new IP

While Nintendo's bread and butter has always been in long-running blockbuster franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario, the company wants to generate more original IP during the Nintendo Switch lifecycle.

In an interview with Nikkei, which was translated by VGC, Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa, said: “I myself am looking at and studying various forms of entertainment. In the future, we will focus on creating new game series as well as long-sellers such as Mario and Zelda. We are constantly building up ideas for the new consoles the market is expecting, but there are some things we can’t do now due to technology and cost constraints”.

Nintendo keeps its hardware and software development teams in close communication, which is why we often see new IP taking advantage of new console features. This is an approach that Valve's Gabe Newell has expressed admiration for in the past.

Given that there are power constraints with the current Nintendo Switch, not all new IP ideas can be explored, but if a Switch Pro does end up launching in the next year, that lifecycle can be extended and we may see some interesting new Nintendo games to go along with it.

KitGuru Says: The most significant new IP from Nintendo in recent years has been Splatoon. Hopefully before all is said and done with the Nintendo Switch, we'll have another new IP to explore.
