In the wake of the popularity of battle royale games, developers have gotten creative with the genre, with titles such as Tetris 99 and Mario 35 adding interesting twists. Though Mario 35 can no longer be played, Nintendo has now announced another Switch exclusive battle royale game: PAC-MAN 99.
Available for free to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers from today, PAC-MAN 99 has you play the classic arcade title, but this time against 98 other opponents. Players must “eat Power Pellets to turn the ghosts blue and make them vulnerable. Eat them to send Jammer PAC-MAN to your opponents! The more ghosts you eat, the more Jammers you'll send!”
Just like Tetris 99, PAC-MAN lets you “Gain the upper hand by switching between eight different preset strategies: speed up, send extra Jammers, and more. Switching at just the right moment could give you an edge over your rivals!”
As can be seen from the trailer, it evokes very similar aesthetics to Tetris 99. Just like with that game, PAC-MAN 99 also offers an offline mode, which can be purchased for $14.99. Furthermore, a number of different themes can also be bought, referencing many other classic Bandai Namco games, including “Xevious, GALAGA, Dig Dug, and more.”
Though the removal of Mario 35 was disappointing, PAC-MAN 99 hopes to fill the hole left by its departure. With Tetris 99 going strong more than 2 years later, here’s hoping that PAC-MAN 99 sees an equal level of enthusiasm.
