The PS5’s first major software update has been announced

With the PlayStation 5 almost halfway into its first year on the market, it was high time that the console received its first major software update. Such is now the case, with Sony announcing that the PS5 will be receiving its first major update later today.

Making the announcement on its blog, PlayStation revealed that a new update will be dropping globally later today, bringing with it a wide range of new features including “new storage options and social features.”

One of the biggest additions is that PS5 owners will now be able to store PS5 games on compatible external USB drives. Previously, this was only available for PS4 games. It is worth noting however that games cannot be played from these external drives, but will still make the transfer process much quicker than installing from a disk or redownloading the game from scratch. The promised support for storage expansion via M.2 drives is still set to come some time in the future.

Other new features include cross-generational Share Play between the PS5 and PS4 players; you can now request to join a friend’s game, instead of waiting for an invite; and the Game Base menu has been improved for “quicker access to important content and features.”

The PlayStation mobile app is also getting more useful, adding “the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store.”

While nothing game changing, it is good to see Sony adding some much-requested features to the PS5, fleshing out the console experience. The full list of changes and additions can be found HERE.
