Mass Effect Remaster has 120fps mode on Xbox but not PlayStation

It’s no secret that Microsoft has put a great deal of work and effort into making backwards compatibility as seamless as possible on Xbox. While Sony has also allowed for backwards compatibility on PS5, its implementation is much less robust. As such, playing the upcoming Mass Effect Legendary Edition on Xbox Series X will come with some distinct advantages.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition was built with the PS4 and Xbox One consoles in mind. Despite this, EA has announced that the next-gen consoles will be able to take advantage of the increased horsepower afforded by these new systems.

Across all consoles, the game will offer ‘favour performance’ and ‘favour resolution’ options. On the lowest end, the Xbox One and PS4 will run at 1080p 30fps or 1080p at a possibly less stable 60fps. Next up, the PS4 Pro, Xbox One X and Series S will run at either 4k 30fps or 1440p at 60fps. The PS5 manages 4k at 60fps, or alternatively 1440p at 60fps, which may sound odd – however it makes sense after looking at the Series X.

On the highest end of the console spectrum Mass Effect on the Xbox Series X will run at either 4k 60fps or 1440p at 120fps. It is likely that the PS5’s performance mode would have targeted a similar framerate, however due to the way in which the PS5 handles backwards compatible titles, games without a dedicated PS5 version can’t tap into 120fps, while Microsoft’s consoles can.

While not running at 120fps may be disappointing for some PlayStation owners, Mass Effect is a single player experience, and so going beyond 60fps isn’t necessarily as beneficial. Still, hopefully EA releases a native next-gen version at some point to allow for feature parity.
