Earlier this week, a report citing “multiple banker sources” claimed that there were several parties exploring an acquisition of Japanese mega-publisher, Square Enix. Of course, while Square Enix might be in the sights of a number of companies, there was nothing to suggest Square Enix was in active talks to be acquired. Now, Square Enix has confirmed that it is not currently looking to be sold.
The initial report popped up early yesterday morning and led to a substantial 13.8 percent rise in Square Enix stock. Due to this, Square Enix had to release a statement of its own, confirming that it is not in any active talks with anyone, nor is the company currently looking to be sold.
“This report is not based on any announcement by SQUARE ENIX HOLDINGS CO.,LTD. We do not consider selling off the company or any part of its businesses, nor have we received any offer from any third party to acquire the company or any part of its business”, the official statement reads.
Following the initial reports, Microsoft, Sony, Tencent and others were names popping up as potential suitors. However, as we reported yesterday, just because companies may be privately exploring the financial side of making an offer doesn't mean Square Enix is in any talks or would accept an offer if a third-party did approach them in an official capacity.
