Despite technical issues and refunds for console players, Cyberpunk 2077 still sold millions of copies in 2020, leading to CD Projekt Red's most successful financial year ever. In fact, total revenues and profits for the launch tracked much higher than The Witcher 3.
CD Projekt Red released its projected earnings for the 2020 calendar year last week. At the moment, the company expects to have generated total revenues of 2139 million PLN, with 1154 million of that being profit. In US dollars, this works out to $583 million in total revenue and $304 million in profit.

The tweet above from Daniel Ahmad shows the scale of this, with Cyberpunk 2077's launch generating over three times as much profit compared to The Witcher 3 at launch. However, it is worth noting that The Witcher 3 went on to sell well for years to come – we have yet to see if Cyberpunk 2077 will have that same potential post-launch.
These earnings aren't too surprising if you were following CD Projekt Red's announcements around the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. The studio boasted the biggest PC game launch ever and earned back development costs on the day of the game's launch. As we learned last week though, CD Projekt Red's main goal is to generate long-term sales, similar to The Witcher 3 and to achieve that, the game needs to be fixed and followed up with DLCs and expansions.

KitGuru Says: Launch window sales were always going to be huge for Cyberpunk 2077 given the amount of hype behind it. It is going to be more interesting to see sales from 2021 and compare the two later.
