Sony has made exclusive titles a major part of the console manufacturer’s strategy in recent generations – a practice which has so far worked out well for them. It would seem that they plan to double down on this, with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO Jim Ryan claiming that the PS5 will have “more dedicated software than ever before.”
In an interview with Nikkei (as translated by VGC), SIE’s president and CEO Jim Ryan claimed that the console manufacturer has been “quietly but steadily investing in high-quality games for PlayStation, and we will make sure that the PS5 generation will have more dedicated software than ever before.”
Part of the way in which he hopes to achieve this is through new mergers and acquisitions. Most recently of course, PlayStation acquired Insomniac Games, known best for the Ratchet and Clank franchise, as well as Spider-Man. According to Ryan “We will not rule out that option in the future” – in regards to further acquisitions.
Sony dominated much of the previous generation due in part to their consistent and continued development and release of high quality AAA exclusive titles – something which Micorosft was simply unable to match.
Since then however, the Xbox creator has been on an acquisition spree, bringing many new developers and publishers under their wing, with the number of first-party Xbox studios now surpassing that of PlayStation’s. If what Ryan is claiming is true, then it will be interesting to see how the output of both Sony and Microsoft pans out over the course of this latest console generation.
