When NieR first released in 2010, it was nothing more than a cult title enjoyed by a select number of fans. The game’s sequel, NieR: Automata however, which came out 7 years later pushed the series into new heights, far exceeded sales expectations and turned NieR into an important franchise for Square Enix. It therefore comes as little surprise that more games in the franchise are on the way.
The official NieR Japan Twitter account revealed that Square Enix is hiring staff for “NieR related works”. While the NieR franchise has expanded beyond games, into stage productions and novels, it is highly likely that the publisher was referring to new games in this context.
What is interesting to note is the fact that it appears as though future NieR titles may be developed internally at Square Enix. The first NieR title was developed by Cavia, with Automata being given to PlatinumGames. NieR being moved internally shows the progression of the importance of the franchise to Square Enix.

Currently, the NieR franchise consists of 3 games and a remaster/remake: 2010’s NieR, 2017’s NieR: Automata, NieR: Replicant ver.1.22474487139… which is just a few days away from release, and NieR Reincarnation, a mobile game which launched in Japan back in February and whose worldwide release is still TBA.
Though the series started from humble beginnings, it is clear that Square Enix has big plans for NieR. It will be interesting to see what new projects are announced.
