Many titles released on the new generation of consoles have come with multiple graphics options, allowing players to prioritise certain aspects to the games. It would appear as though the upcoming PS5 exclusive Returnal may not need such options, as the game will reportedly run at 4K 60fps with ray-tracing on for an uncompromising experience.
Returnal is the next major PlayStation 5 exclusive. Set to launch on the 30th of April, more and more details have been revealed about the unique and exciting 3rd person horror game. According to PlayStation Portugal (and translated by IGN), Returnal will run at 4K, 60fps with ray-tracing on. Previous PS5 games such as Spider-Man Miles Morales offered different graphics options, with compromises being made to either resolution, ray-tracing, or frame rate.
If what PlayStation Portugal said is true, then Returnal may have no need for such options, unless the team also plans to introduce a 120fps mode – something which shooters can benefit from.
Thanks to modern technologies such as temporal injection, checkerboard rendering and more, it is possible to make 4K images from lesser resolutions. It may be the case that Returnal is utilising such a technology in order to achieve all three major current-gen technical targets of 4K, 60fps and ray-tracing. Fortunately, we don't have too much longer to wait to see what the mysterious Returnal is all about, both story wise and technologically.
