Sonic’s 30th anniversary celebrations seemingly pushed to 2022

2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. Historically, SEGA has made a big deal of these landmark anniversaries, typically accompanied with the release of new games and more. The publisher had previously announced its intentions to do something similar for Sonic’s 30th, however it seems as though this may have now been pushed back to 2022.

In the latest issue of ‘License Global’ (as reported by TailsChannel), Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary was brought to attention. Alongside the reveal of a number of impressive statistics for the blue blur, such as the fact that the franchise has made over $1 billion to date; became the number 1 video game-based film (with 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog); and seeing a combined sales and downloads of over 1.2 billion (including mobile titles), the magazine seemingly confirmed that Sonic’s 30th anniversary celebrations would be delayed.

Alongside the bottom of the page, it was confirmed that “games, movies, animation, mobile, partnerships and more” should be expected in 2022. This has led many to believe that Sonic’s 30th anniversary celebrations may have been pushed to next year.

SEGA has already announced that 2022 will be a big year for Sonic, with the sequel to 2020’s film set to release then, and the new Sonic tv show Sonic Prime also coming out next year, it seems as though the games will likewise line up with this release schedule.

Recent Sonic games have been hit-or-miss and in the wake of Sonic Forces’ negative reception, the publisher promised to take more time to develop Sonic titles to ensure maximum quality. With COVID-19 delaying games, films and more, it makes sense that SEGA would choose to push the big return of Sonic to next year – if that is what the game needs.
