The new BioShock game will use Unreal Engine 5

Back in December 2019, 2K Games officially set up a new studio to begin working on a new BioShock game. Things went pretty quiet after that but this year, a series of job listings have begun revealing more details about BioShock 4, including the fact that it will be an open-world game and based on Unreal Engine 5.

We first learned that BioShock would make the transition to an open world design in April, with multiple job positions mentioning open world gameplay. Now, a new job listing for a Senior Gameplay Programmer (via GamesRadar) reveals that the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5, with the position calling for someone to “work within Unreal Engine 5 adapting existing systems and building new technology in”.

Epic Games initially announced Unreal Engine 5 last year, but earlier this week, the new engine officially went into ‘Early Access' for developers, with plans to roll out the full version in early 2022. A few other games have also been confirmed to be using the engine, including new projects from Xbox Game Studios – a first-person RPG from InXile, the next game from Gears studio ‘The Coalition' as well as Ninja Theory's Hellblade 2.

Unreal Engine 5 is still in its early days, so this new BioShock project is going to be quite far out. You can see some of the new engine features in action, HERE.
