Reports claim Sony is working on a dedicated handheld console

After spending a couple generations away from the handheld market, Sony seems to be making a grand return. Following on from the surprise success of the PlayStation Portal, reports are claiming that Sony is planning to make a proper Nintendo Switch competitor.

As reported by Bloomberg (paywall), (and collated by ResetEra user Dal) Sony is said to be “in the early stages of developing a portable console that would play its PlayStation 5 games on the move.”

As mentioned, Sony has slowly been finding its way back into the handheld market, with the Remote Play powered PS Portal recently getting an update to allow for cloud streaming.

Interestingly, according to the report, the Portal was originally planned to have much more functionality – being standalone like the Steam Deck / Switch.

While the PlayStation Vita was an unfortunate sales failure sandwiched in between two very different console generations, the handheld market is in a completely different place now, and so it would be exciting to see Sony have another crack at making a dedicated PlayStation handheld.
