Borderlands to swiftly hit home streaming after box office bomb

At this point, it is widely known that the Borderlands film has bombed at the Box Office, after a string of negative reviews that ranked it amongst the worst Hollywood videogame adaptations ever. Soon, you won't have to shell out cinema-prices to see the chaos for yourselves, as the digital release is due to drop later this months after just a few weeks in theatres.

Lionsgate, the film's distributor, has not yet announced official dates, but sources like When to Stream, DVD Release Dates and ScreenTime all put the Borderlands film as hitting streaming/digital on the 30th of August. This would be an exceptionally quick turnaround, given that the film debuted in cinemas on the 9th of August.

The Borderlands film has a star-studded cast, including big names like Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis. In all, the film is said to have cost more than $100 million to produce, making it a rather big gamble. The film made less than $5 million back on its box office opening. To date, it has reportedly made around $17 million globally.

Given that this film is unlikely going to recoup much more investment via ticket sales, the next step is to try and recoup some of that money via licenses to streaming services, as well as selling Digital and physical copies.

KitGuru Says: Given the lack of box office interest for Borderlands this summer, a quick pivot to home media could help with reaching a wider viewer base.
