Guerrilla Games confirm they are ‘done’ with the Killzone series

During the PS2/3 era, Guerrilla Games were known for their work on the Killzone franchise – a sci-fi FPS series with a heavy emphasis on visual splendour. With the overwhelming success of 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn however, the team moved on to this new IP – now officially confirming they are “done” with the prior series.

In an interview discussing the upcoming release of LEGO Horizon Adventures, Guerrilla Games art director Roy Postma spoke on the switch from Killzone to Horizon following 2014’s Killzone: Shadowfall, saying:

“We were done with it as a team. As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette. It was, by choice, the opposite of Killzone.”

Postma added, “I think the themes that [Horizon’s] story and the characters represent are relatable for all ages and people, like having a found family of friends and finding your place in the world.”

Killzone Guerrilla

While the Killzone series did have its own set of fans, there’s no denying that Horizon shot the studio to the upper echelons of PlayStation’s first-party studios – both in terms of critical reception and game sales.

All that said, with the Horizon series having released multiple entries now (with even more rumoured/confirmed to be on the way), it’ll be interesting to see when Guerrilla decides that they are ‘done’ with this franchise too; likely not for quite some time.
