Square Enix unveils Guardians of the Galaxy, releasing later this year

Last night during E3, Square Enix officially unveiled its upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game, just as promised. Surprisingly, the game is coming out this year and will be a single-player, story-driven action/adventure game.

Guardians of the Galaxy has been in development at Eidos Montreal for several years now. Players will take on the role of Peter Quill, otherwise known as Star Lord, while the rest of the squad is controlled by AI. While players will mainly be fighting as one character, you can direct your AI squad to activate certain abilities.

The story starts off one year after the Guardians first get together, so the characters are all well-acquainted by this point. Players will get to choose dialogue options during conversations, which will have small changes for character interactions, but the story as a whole will always end the same way, so don't expect multiple major endings to explore.

So far, no DLC or microtransactions are planned for this game, nor will there be any ‘live service' elements as we saw with Marvel's Avengers in 2020. Guardians of the Galaxy is set to release on the 26th of October for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4 and PS5.

KitGuru Says: Square Enix is going in a completely different direction for Guardians of the Galaxy, which is good news, particularly after seeing Marvel's Avengers struggle to find its footing. Will any of you be picking this one up later this year?
