Samsung to produce 5nm Tensor chip for Google Pixel 6

Earlier this week, Google officially revealed the Pixel 6, the company's first smartphone to use its own SoC, know as Google Tensor. As it turns out, Google has signed on Samsung to produce the chip on the 5nm process.

During its initial announcement, Google did not disclose who would be producing the new Tensor chip, but according to sources speaking with Nikkei Asia, Google has chosen to go with Samsung over TSMC. While TSMC manufactures chips for Google's data centres, Samsung will be producing the Tensor SoC for the Pixel 6 using  “advanced 5-nanometer process technology”.

Samsung has another major customer in the smartphone SoC space, having produced the Snapdragon 888 for Qualcomm. Recently, Samsung has stated that it will be pushing its foundry business this year with a focus on 5nm and 4nm technology.

Neither Google or Samsung have commented publicly to confirm or deny the report. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Google will be revealing more on the Pixel 6 and its new processor in September/October. Are any of you due for a phone upgrade this year? Will you be waiting to see the Pixel 6?
