Sonic the Hedgehog has had a tumultuous life. Once as big as Mario himself, SEGA’s mascot has ebbed and flowed when it comes to popularity both within and outside the video game medium. Following 2017’s disappointing Sonic Forces, SEGA seems to have gone back to the drawing board, with the hedgehog’s next entry supposedly being majorly important.
In an interview with The Sonic Stadium, Sonic’s producer Takashi Iizuka revealed that since 2017, Sonic Team have been working on “something new and challenging” for Sonic – the impact of which could last a decade.
Speaking on the currently-unnamed game itself, Iizuka said “The new title in development is progressing towards a 2022 release, so I can’t really call it an Anniversary title. However, Sonic Adventure laid the foundation for 20 years of Sonic titles after its release, so in the same way I really hope that this new title releasing in 2022 lays the foundation for the following future Sonic titles – that is the idea behind the challenge for the team.”
The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise can be broken down into different ages, with Classic Sonic, Adventure-Style Sonic and now Modern Sonic. If what Iizuka says is true, then Sonic Team may be working on the next stage of the Hedgehog’s future – the fourth evolution of Sonic the Hedgehog. Hopefully we’ll get more details soon.
