23-hour long ‘PsychOdyssey’ documentary gets limited Blu Ray release

Back in February of 2023, Double Fine Productions – the studio behind the likes of Psychonauts and Brutal Legend – released a massive 23-hour long documentary covering the full development of the studio’s most recent release ‘Psychonauts 2’. In collaboration with Limited Run Games, the full doc is getting a highly limited Blu Ray release featuring a bonus epilogue.

Making the announcement, the team at Limited Run Games said “Behold, the Double Fine PsychOdyssey Limited Edition Blu-ray Collector's Set! 2 Player Productions’ astoundingly in-depth 33 episode documentary has been stuffed on region-free polycarbonate discs for your viewing pleasure.”

Costing $74.99 and limited to just 2000 units, the collector's edition Blu Ray set includes:

  • Double Fine PsychOdyssey 33-Episode Series in 1080p HD on 6 Blu-ray Discs
  • SteelBook Packaging with Transparent Slipcover
  • Digipak with 2 Bonus Blu-ray Discs of Archival and Previously Unreleased Material
  • 80-page Color Perfect Bound Behind-the-Scenes Booklet
  • Individually Numbered Limited Edition Rigid Slipcase
  • Region Free dics with English Subtitles

Interestingly, the YouTube release of PsychOdyssey was published in 4K, though according to Limited Run Games “PsychOdyssey was released initially online in 4K to maximize streaming quality, but the show had been captured natively in 1080p HD and scaled to 4k in post production. We found the cost of producing 4K discs to be prohibitive and difficult to justify without a native 4K source or HDR color space. These new 1080p files created specifically for the Blu-ray release combine the best of both worlds for a definitive presentation.”

Video game development documentaries have existed for a while and are always interesting to watch. Even so, PsychOdyssey goes above and beyond in showcasing the many ups and downs of video game development – and so even if you do not plan to purchase the limited edition steelbook, the doc is certainly worth watching on YouTube.
