Battlefield 2042 will be an always-online experience – even in training mode

EA and DICE made the bold decision with Battlefield 2042 to drop its single player mode, offering a purely multiplayer experience. While this news came with mixed reactions, many fans were excited by the prospect of DICE putting all of its resources into the multiplayer mode. It seems this has come with an unfortunate reality however, as it has been revealed that the game will not be playable in any capacity when offline.

In a recent ‘Battlefield Briefing’, the team at DICE answered some frequently asked questions. Alongside revealing that not all floors of the maps’ buildings will be accessible, and explaining how they have changed their approach to out-of-bounds areas as a consequence of the larger maps, the team addressed the question of whether the game can be played offline.

One of the questions asked “Since AI Soldiers can be used in Solo mode, does that mean I can play offline?” to which they responded that “Battlefield 2042 is a multiplayer-only experience. So while you can play Solo against AI Soldiers if you’d like to practice, it will be in an online setting.”

While it is understandable that a multiplayer-focused game would function primarily online, it is disappointing to see that even the game’s training modes – which players might choose to engage in either for practice, for fun, or due to having spotty internet at the time – still requires an active internet connection.

While a majority of video game players have access to the internet, this isn't always the case, and so it is unfortunate to see that those who enjoy the gameplay that Battlefield games offer will HAVE to have an active internet connection – otherwise they will not be able to access the game in any capacity.
