Microsoft CEO says Xbox Series X/S are ‘fastest selling consoles’ in its history

Last night during Microsoft's quarterly earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella talked up the success of Xbox so far this generation. The company reports that the Xbox Series X/S consoles are the fastest selling in Xbox history, beating out the original Xbox, the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One.

During the earnings call, Nadella had the following to say: “We're all in on games. The Xbox Series S and X are our fastest selling consoles ever with more consoles sold life-to-date than any previous generation”. Microsoft expects further growth from Xbox in the months to come as well, in part thanks to its “biggest games line-up ever”, which includes the 27 games announced for Xbox Game Pass at E3 in June.

Unfortunately, since the early Xbox One days, Microsoft has stopped sharing console sales figures, so we don't know for sure how Xbox Series X/S sales compare to the 10 million PS5 units that Sony has sold so far. However, Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners estimates that Xbox Series X/S sales reached 6.5 million as of the 30th of June, compared to 5.7 million sales of the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in the same timeframe after launch.

Over the next 18 months, Microsoft has a number of Xbox exclusives lined up, all of which will be available on Game Pass. This year, we'll be seeing Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite, followed by Arkane's Redfall and Bethesda's Starfield in 2022.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft's gaming strategy heading into this generation appears to be paying off, although there continues to be an unfortunate supply chain shortage, so demand will continue to outstrip retail stocks.
