Over the last four years, 2K Games has separated the NBA 2K games, with an ‘old gen' version for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, and a ‘next gen' version, released only for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. PC gamers have been complaining about this disparity since the debut of NBA 2K21, but year after year, the situation went unaddressed. Fortunately, that is finally changing.
NBA 2K25 on PC will be the same version found on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. That means PC players will get access to ‘The City' for the first time, the new MMO-style area where hoopers can gather, complete side quests and play games in the Rec, Pro-AM or on the Park courts. The only thing PC players won't get is crossplay multiplayer, so you won't get to match up with console players.
Currently, NBA 2K24 has an overwhelmingly negative rating on Steam. These games typically get negative reviews each year anyway due to 2K's monetisation practices and costly in-game currency. However, in the case of NBA 2K24, many of the top reviews primarily cite the disparity between the next-gen console versions and the PC version. Given that many gaming PCs are already on par with, or ahead of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, keeping the ‘next-gen' version off of PC didn't make much sense to anyone outside of 2K.
The new cover athletes for NBA 2K25 have also been announced. This year, newly crowned NBA champion, Jason Tatum, will be the cover athlete with the reverse WNBA side of the cover featuring A'Ja Wilson, a two-time MVP winner. Finally, the Hall of Fame edition this year will be swapping out Kobe Bryant for Vince Carter, who retired just a few seasons ago after 22 years in the NBA, including a legendary dunk contest performance.

KitGuru Says: Having just recently picked up a Steam Deck, PC may now be my main platform for NBA 2K. With that in mind, I'm looking forward to finally getting the proper version of the game on PC. With that said, I'm not a huge fan of The City and what it has led to in terms of in-game ads, sponsorships and slowed MyPlayer progression combined with jacked up microtransaction prices.
