Intel Core i7-12700 benchmark puts it close to the Ryzen 7 5800X

Early samples of Intel's upcoming 12th Gen ‘Alder Lake' processors are starting to do the rounds, leading to early benchmark results. The latest benchmark entry was spotted on the Geekbench 5 database, putting the upcoming CPU in close competition with AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X.

The Geekbench 5 entry for the Core i7-12700 was spotted by @benchleaks. As we can see from the processor information listed, the Core i7-12700 features 8 cores and 16 threads with a 2.1GHz base clock, a 4.8GHz boost clock, and 25MB of L3 cache. It's worth noting these specifications may not be entirely accurate, as Geekbench 5 does not yet fully support hybrid processor architectures.

It is also possible that Intel is planning to use a different core configuration for the Core i7-12700 compared to the i7-12700K. From what we know, the Core i7-12700K will feature 8x big cores with 16x threads and an additional 4x small cores.

With a 1595 single-core score and a 10170 multi-score score, the Core i7-12700 offers similar performance to the Core i7-11700 in the single-core test (1595 vs 1633) and is significantly higher in the multi-core test (10170 vs 8822). The Core i7-12700 comes close to the Ryzen 7 5800X in both tests as well, with 1595 vs 1672 points in the single-core test and 10170 vs 10376 in the multicore test.

KitGuru says: We've still got quite a wait ahead of us before retail sample reviews and benchmarks surface, but these early results should give us a good idea of what to expect from Alder Lake in a few months time.
