YouTube shuts down popular Discord music bot ‘Groovy’

One of the great things about Discord is the number of useful plugins and bots that you can implement on servers. One of the more popular plugins, Groovy, is unfortunately being shut down at the end of this month due to legal threats from YouTube.

Groovy can be used on Discord servers to play background music in voice chats. This music is pulled from YouTube, which is why the company sent a cease and desist order to the creator of the bot. Part of the issue is that Groovy circumvents YouTube's advertising, so no revenue is generated when songs are played via Groovy.

YouTube says that Groovy violates the site's terms of service by “modifying the service and using it for commercial purposes”. Groovy has been installed on 16 million Discord servers and there was a subscription option for the bot, which unlocked some additional features.

Groovy Premium can no longer be purchased and Groovy as a whole will stop operating on the 30th of August. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: While Groovy might be shut down, there will undoubtedly be alternative bots on the way to replace it.
