The recent WWE 2K entries have been mired with a great deal of controversy and negativity, with the most recent game in the franchise, WWE 2K20 being universally panned by both critics and fans alike. Though the franchise took a break in 2021 to focus on quality, it seems the relationship between 2K and the wider WWE company is currently ‘strained.’
Following the recent announcement of WWE 2K22, which gave fans a first look at the game – as well as confirming that the wrestling game will be launching on the 22nd of March 2022 – it was claimed by sportsgamersonline that “there's been infighting regarding direction of the game.”
Providing further details, they claimed that “2K Sports and WWE have been going back and forth on pushing back WWE 2K22 since almost immediately after the game was announced” with 2K Sports and developer Visual Concepts wanting to delay the game, while WWE wished to see it release during its regular window.
As is now evident, the game was in fact delayed to March 2022, seemingly due to the fact that in the attempt to update the game in a much bigger way than usual, the game is reportedly suffering from “shaping up to be the most outdated roster a game has seen.”
The WWE 2K series has been on a heavy decline, even when compared to other sports franchises, and so hopefully this delay ultimately proves to be to the benefit of the game. We will have to wait and see.
