iPhone 13 rumoured to let you unlock phone while wearing a mask

While the iPhone’s faceID technology is impressive and when used well can be even more convenient than fingerprint unlocking, the COVID-19 pandemic and its knock-on effect – such as requiring people to wear masks – has made the feature mostly useless as the technology was not equipped to work with masks. Fortunately, it seems that the upcoming iPhone 13 is taking this into account, allowing owners to use FaceID while wearing both a mask and glasses.

According to industry insider John Prosser (who has a 74.3% accuracy rating over the course of 183 rumours) the upcoming iPhone 13 – or whatever it ends up being called – will feature an upgraded FaceID module which will allow for users to unlock their iPhones while wearing both a mask and glasses (or each one individually).

Following the mask mandate, Apple released an update to FaceID which when recognising a mask, would instantly bring up the password screen instead of continually searching for a face. Later on, they allowed those with an Apple Watch to use the accessory to unlock the phone.

While both of these helped a great deal, it still did not solve the core issue. With COVID-19 still present around the world, it makes sense that Apple would want to ensure that their devices are as convenient to use as possible. Hopefully more can be done to improve all older devices with FaceID too.
