AMD expects to increase energy efficiency by 30x in AI and HPC by 2025

AMD recently announced that one of its goals is to increase the energy efficiency of AMD EPYC CPUs and AMD Instinct accelerators by 30x in AI and HPC. To put this into perspective, to achieve this goal, AMD will have to be 2.5x faster at increasing energy efficiency than the “aggregate industry-wide improvement made during the last five years”.

One benefit that such an increase would bring is the amount of electricity it will save, which AMD claims to be at the level of billions. If AMD can increase energy efficiency in AI and HPC by 30x, it would result in a 97% reduction in power consumption to complete a single operation in today's systems. Such improvement would be a massive win for the environment.

According to Addison Snell, CEO of Intersect360 Research, any gains are now harder to obtain “as the historical advantages that come with Moore's Law have greatly diminished”. So, if AMD can really achieve its objective, it will be proof of its ability to push the boundaries of chip technology.

This goal is part of AMD's Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) plan, which will include operations, supply chain and products.

KitGuru says: Part of this energy efficiency objective can be achieved with AMD's new 3D V-Cache technology and moving to smaller process nodes, but that alone won't be enough for the massive improvement AMD is planning. We'll have to wait and see what other technologies or methods AMD has up its sleeve over the next few years.
