While God of War Ragnarök was first teased back in 2020, the game had since gone AWOL, with Santa Monica Studio remaining tight-lipped on the sequel to 2018’s Game of the Year winner. Finally, ahead of its 2022 release, the game was shown off for the first time.
Officially titled God of War Ragnarök, the sequel to 2018’s Game of the Year winner was finally shown off for the first time, giving fans a look at the next adventure from Kratos and Atreus. Launching in 2022, the game is “picking up a few years after the events of God of War (2018). The freezing winds of Fimbulwinter have come to Midgard, making survival for Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir in the Norse wilds even more challenging than before.”
The trailer showcased a surprising amount of new information, including the fact that it will directly address some of the first game’s most climactic moments; teased the confrontation between Kratos and Thor; and showed off some of the new moves available to both Krtatos and Atreus including a grappling hook, “new attack abilities, a new Runic Summon for Atreus, and of course, the return of Kratos’ legendary weapons.”
God of War Ragnarök will go beyond 2018’s game in many ways, including the desire to “push player choice in combat. Whether it’s through hard hitting combos, a mastery of elements, or clever defensive tactics – you will find plenty of opportunity to fight alongside our duo in a way that feels uniquely expressive,” while also letting you visit all 9 realms, instead of the first game’s 6.
Finally, it was confirmed that Kratos and Atreus’ journey through the Norse mythology will conclude with Ragnarök. While 7 games were set in the God of War’s home country of Greece, Ragnarök will be the final game set in ancient Scandinavia.
God of War 2018 reinvented the franchise in a major way, breathing new life into it, and making Kratos more popular than ever. It is good to see the team not wanting to oversaturate the franchise as they once did with the original iteration of the games. Capping the Norse chapter of God of War with 2 games seems like a smart decision, and will allow the team at Sony Santa Monica to move on to new ideas. A God of War set in ancient Egypt perhaps? We will have to wait and see.
