Chris Pratt will voice Mario in new film

Nintendo recently held a Direct where among the announcement of many new games and updates to older titles, the console manufacturer gave fans the first details for the upcoming Mario movie. The most surprising thing however was the reveal that Chris Pratt will play the titular Mario, with Jack Black voicing Bowser.

Nintendo officially announced the release date for the upcoming animated Mario movie, saying “Ta-da! Mario will jump into the world of motion pictures holiday 2022! Check out some of the key cast members who’ll be voicing Mario and his friends in the movie.”

The voice cast features a star studded list of actors, however many of the names attached may surprise you. Voicing Mario himself will be Chris Pratt, with Anya Taylor-Joy taking the role of Princess Peach. Charlie Day will be voicing Luigi, as Jack Black plays the villainous role of Bowser.

More characters confirmed include Keegan Michael-Key, who will voice Toad; Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong; Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong; Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and last but not least Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

While Charles Martinet was confirmed to be making a cameo in the film, it seems as though the movie will feature a heavy amount of voice acting – something Martinet has never had to do for Mario – and so the role has been passed along to Pratt.

This cast list was certainly surprising to see, and it seems to be pitching the upcoming film to a much wider audience, hoping to capture as many people thanks to this star-studded cast. Chris Pratt as Mario is certainly an interesting choice. Hopefully his take on the Italian Plumber does not end up feeling too unnatural, especially as Martinet has been lending his voice to the character for so long. We will have to wait and see when the first trailer releases.
