Dolby Vision support for gaming is now available on Xbox

While HDR standards are still rather inconsistent across various media industries, it is widely accepted that Dolby vision is the best. Though previously only available for films and TV shows, the HDR standard is now coming to video games – but only on Xbox.

Previously claimed to be arriving in a future update, Xbox has now announced that “Starting today, gamers with compatible Dolby Vision-enabled TVs will be able to enjoy full-spectrum visuals with the rollout of Dolby Vision gaming on Xbox Series X|S.”

The benefits to Dolby Vision above most other HDR standards is the fact that “Games in Dolby Vision automatically map to any display that supports Dolby Vision, delivering players the benefit of seeing the best possible picture available” adding “incredible brightness, color, contrast, and detail” to every frame.

While Dolby and Xbox are said to be “working together closely with developers to provide the tools they need so their titles can take full advantage of Dolby Vision,” there are currently already over 100 games ready to take advantage of Dolby Vision.

All other games will also see a benefit. Though not a bespoke implementation, all previous games that utilise either standard HDR or Auto HDR will see improvements thanks to “new visual enhancement capabilities that utilize Dolby Vision technology to deliver an improved visual experience.”

Of course, in order to take advantage of all this, you need to be connected to a display which supports Dolby vision. While most high end and mid range 4K TV sets come with Dolby Vision equipped, there are still millions of console owners who can't take advantage. Though ultimately not a game changer, Dolby Vision support coming to Xbox is certainly a boon for those who own both the console and a support television.
