Midnight Society lays off 50% of Deadrop development team

Following the revelation that Dr Disrespect was banned from Twitch for messaging a minor, his game studio, Midnight Society, dropped their association with him. Now, in the months that have followed, the studio has faced financial struggles, leading to 50% of the development team being let go.

Midnight Society is currently working on Deadrop, a vertical extraction shooter taking place in a massive tower building. It was an idea that Guy Beahm (Dr Disrespect) came up with himself after spending thousands of hours in Battle Royale games like Call of Duty Warzone. Copies of the game have been sold, with keys taking the form of NFTs, although the title is still in alpha for the time being.

Discussing the decision to let go 50% of the Midnight Society team, co-founder, Robert Bowling, said the following on the studio's public Discord server:

“As most of you know, we have faced multiple unexpected challenges in recent months. To adapt to these changes and secure the future of Midnight Society, DEADROP, and our commitment to providing innovative gaming experiences, we’ve made the tough decision to streamline our operations, which includes a significant workforce reduction.”

While this will no doubt have an impact on the game's development, Midnight Society still plans to officially launch Deadrop in 2025.

KitGuru Says: A 50% reduction in workforce is no small amount, so I struggle to see how the game can still stick to its original timeline, but we'll see. As an independent studio, there is no doubt plenty of passion left amongst the remaining team members.
