Gameplay footage of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers released

Ever since it was first announced that Spider-Man would be making his way into the world of Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers, fans were curious to see how Spidey would look, feel and swing. Ahead of its launch on the 30th of November, the team released the first footage of the wall-crawler – and it doesn’t look good.

In an exclusive gameplay preview by IGN, fans were given a first look at how Spider-Man would act, fight and swing in Marvel’s Avengers. From the footage shown, it is immediately clear that on every level the character is a downgrade from Insomniac Games’ iteration.

The hand-to-hand combat is perhaps the most similar to Insomniac spidey. Combos appear flashy and in his classic style, Spider-Man jumps all over the place doing all manner of flips as he fights. Unfortunately, it simply appears to be less fluid than that found in Insomniac’s Spider-Man. Furthermore, there are fewer tactical options here, with combat – while flashy – appearing in many ways to have the depth of an early-game MMO.

As the game was not designed with it in mind, swinging is severely downgraded, with Spider-Man unable to gather any significant amount of speed. Furthermore, his webs simply attach to an invisible ceiling – similar to the PlayStation 1 title. While Spidey can wall crawl, the entire map is surrounded by the aforementioned invisible ceiling, meaning that Spider-Man can neither swing nor climb past a certain point – making the world feel small.

Unlike all the other heroes in Marvel’s Avengers, Spider-Man can be directly compared to the many iterations of video games developed starring him over the past two decades and more. In making this comparison, it is clear that there are simply too many limitations to make Spidey work within the confines of the game. Hopefully he plays better than he looks.
