Halo Infinite glitch activates campaign co-op

This month, the Halo Infinite campaign officially launched and as great as it is, the lack of co-op play has been disappointing for many fans. As it turns out, there is a way to get local co-op working already, but it requires exploiting a glitch.

Campaign co-op has been a staple of the Halo franchise since its inception, with split-screen campaign co-op being present in Bungie's original games for Xbox. As it turns out, split-screen, local co-op is present in Halo Infinite, but if you want to try it, you'll have to glitch your way there.

Twitter user ‘nobleactual' discovered the glitch (via Windows Central). In order to get split-screen co-op working, you need to load the Halo Infinite campaign with your Xbox in offline mode. From there, connect a second controller and sign into an Xbox account, then load up a campaign save using Controller 1. Once loading has finished, hit the start button on Controller 1 and then back out of the menu. Then, hit start on Controller 2 and split-screen will activate and a second Master Chief will appear in the game.

Unfortunately, this is an early, unfinished version of co-op campaign, so there are some issues. For instance, player 2 does not get their own HUD and in some areas, you will experience graphical errors. It is also worth noting that this only works on Xbox consoles and not on PC.

For the next several months, this will be the only way to experience co-op campaign, unless 343 Industries patches this glitch out of the game. Official campaign co-op is planned for Halo Infinite's Season 2 update, which drops in May 2022.

KitGuru Says: I'm most interested in seeing how split-screen co-op impacts performance on an Xbox Series X. In single-player mode the game delivers an almost flawless 60FPS throughout, so it will be interesting to see if the hardware can keep that standard up in split-screen mode.
