Remedy is making a F2P co-op multiplayer game

While Remedy Entertainment has historically been known for developing story-focused 3rd-person action adventure titles with interesting twists, the studio has started to branch out, with multiple new projects across different genres and perspectives. Remedy has now announced that the studio is working on a free-to-play co-op title.

Making the announcement on their website via a press release, the Finnish studio said “Remedy Entertainment signs a global development, license and distribution agreement with Tencent for the co-operative multiplayer game codenamed Vanguard.”

Offering further information, they said “The game codenamed Vanguard (“the game”), Remedy’s original intellectual property, is a free-to-play, co-operative PvE shooter that combines Remedy’s narrative expertise and action gameplay into an immersive multiplayer experience.”

They continued, “The game is developed with the Unreal Engine for PC and console platforms. Remedy will develop and publish the game worldwide, excluding selected Asian markets, where Tencent will localize and publish the game.”

The game is still in a proof-of-concept phase, though it has been confirmed to be treated as a AAA release. Additionally, Tencent is said to be working on a mobile port of the same game – though it is unknown how similar it will be to the console release.

Speaking on the game’s atypical model (at least atypical for Remedy), the studio’s CEO – Tero Virtala – said “Vanguard marks Remedy’s first entry into Games-as-a-Service business model, executed by our top tier team of free-to-play experts. We are building something new and exciting for co-operative multiplayer space, on top of Remedy’s strengths.”

Back in May, Tencent acquired a minority Stake in Remedy Entertainment. It seems that Vanguard will be the fruits of this labour. Despite this, hopefully the game is developed with Remedy’s much-enjoyed level of creativity in tact.
