PSVR 2 display to double pixel density compared to Oculus Quest 2

In recent weeks, Sony has finally begun opening up about the PSVR 2, going as far as to share some of the upcoming headset's impressive technical specifications. Now through additional sources, we know even more about the headset and its new display, which will apparently offer a huge boost in pixel density compared to the original PSVR and the Oculus Quest 2.

Officially, Sony has told us that PlayStation VR2 will offer a 4K HDR OLED display (2000×2040 per eye), 110-degree field of view, foveated rendering and 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate. According to supply chain reports, Sony is going with an RGB Stripe panel for its new headset, versus the PenTile OLED displays found in early VR headsets. This change alone will go a long way towards eliminating the screen door effect, where the user can see the pixels on the display very easily.

Screen Door Effect shouldn't be too much of a concern regardless, however, as the new display will apparently over more than 800 pixels per inch (800 PPI), per eye. The original PSVR had a PPI of 193 per eye, so Sony is cramming far more pixels into a small space, which will in turn greatly enhance visual fidelity and create a more immersive experience while wearing the headset.

As Android Central points out, the average smartphone has a PPI of around 500 for the entire display. At this point, the VR industry has gone well beyond using smartphone displays for headsets.

Currently, Sony is expected to launch PSVR 2 some time this year, but an official date has not been announced just yet. Sony has also yet to show off the new PSVR controllers in action, which will offer better hand tracking compared to the old PS Move wands.

KitGuru Says: PSVR 2 is shaping up to be a very impressive, high-end headset. Hopefully Sony will be able to keep costs down to maintain competitive pricing up against other headsets, like the Quest 2.
