Marvel Rivals’ closed beta nears 70,000 concurrent players on Steam

Gamers have been shocked by the low player numbers for Concord, Sony's next big live-service game, due to launch on PS5 and PC next month. During an open beta period, the game reached just 2,000 concurrent players, a far cry from the numbers we would expect from a first-party game from PS Studios. To put it into perspective, the ongoing Marvel Rivals closed beta has accrued 30x more players on Steam so far.

Marvel Rivals, the new Overwatch-esque hero shooter starring characters from all across the Marvel universe, is now in a closed beta test, requiring invites to participate. Despite the closed nature of this test, the game has peaked at just over 69,000 players, as shown by SteamDB's player data. This is the largest test to date by far, with the earlier closed alpha tests garnering between 10,000 and 30,000 concurrent players.

There has not yet been an announcement for a Marvel Rivals open beta but with numbers like this, the game could crack Steam's top 10 if it opened up to all players. Of course, having a big beta, or even a very big launch, doesn't guarantee sustained success, but it certainly sets a game up for a better shot.

Concord's open beta peaked at just few thousand players on Steam. It is almost like history is repeating the Overwatch vs Battleborn saga, or even LawBreakers, which also failed to resonate with a significant audience.

KitGuru Says: Marvel Rivals seems to be shaping up nicely at this stage. Hopefully release date news is just around the corner.
