Valve overhauls Steam demos in new update

Over the past few months, Valve has been making a ton of moves when it comes to updating and improving its Steam PC storefront. Following the likes of the family share revamp, a new screen recorder and much more, the latest function to receive an overhaul are Steam demos.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Valve officially unveiled its ‘Great Steam Demo Update, 2024’ saying “With thousands of new playable game demos launching every year, often as part of Steam Next Fest, we've noticed some trends in feedback from developers and players about changes they'd like to see made to the process and functionality. So, we've put together an update based on that feedback.”

The improvements being made a rather substantial, with the full suite of changes being as follows:

  • You can add demos to your library without immediately installing them
  • Demos can be installed even if you already own the full game
  • Demos can be explicitly removed from your account
  • When a demo is uninstalled, it will automatically get removed from your library.
  • Demos can now have a separate store page
  • User reviews for demos now an option
  • Demos now appear more in the Steam store
  • Wishlisters notified when developers launch a demo

Steam has always been good when it comes to game demos, and so it is extra exciting to see Valve putting in time, thought and effort into making the experience that much more convenient.
