Capcom settles lawsuit alleging copyright infringement in Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry

Last summer, a lawsuit was filed against Capcom, alleging that classic titles like Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry used unlicensed copyrighted images in-game. Now eight months later, the case has been settled, allowing Capcom to avoid a costly and potentially lengthy legal battle.

The complaint filed by Judy Juracek in 2021 alleged that Capcom used several photographs from a book she had published back in 1996 as assets in Resident Evil and Devil May Cry titles, as well as others. Roughly 80 images were said to have been used without permission. Some of the images were used for textures to help add detail to levels – the Resident Evil 4 logo also allegedly uses a texture from Juracek's book.

At the time of filing, the plaintiff was seeking up to $12 million USD in damages. Now, as reported by Polygon, the lawsuit has been “amicably resolved” and a dismissal has been filed to put an end to the lawsuit.

While the case was settled amicably, no specific details on the settlement have been made public. Capcom has not provided any further comment at this time.

KitGuru Says: Some of the comparison photos shown in the original lawsuit were quite convincing, but fortunately for Capcom, the publisher has been able to avoid dragging this out and potentially facing a jury trial, which is always a huge risk for all sides.
