Dead Island 2 reportedly on track for 2022 release after eight years in development

It has been eight years since Dead Island 2 was first announced and several years since the last update on the game's development. That silence could be coming to an end soon though, as sources claim that the game is nearing the final stages of development and could even be on track to launch this year.

Originally revealed back in 2014, Dead Island 2 was originally being created by Yager Development, but due to various issues, publisher Deep Silver eventually transferred the project to Sumo Digital. Then, in 2019, development changed hands again, going to Deep Silver's internal Dambuster Studio.

Now, according to Tom Henderson, a leaker with a decent track record, Dead Island 2 has made significant progress at Dambuster. According to sources familiar with the game's development, the game is currently expected to release in Q4 2022, although it could be delayed to 2023 should extra time be required.

The game apparently opens with the player on a plane, when suddenly a zombie outbreak takes place, forcing the plane to crash land in Hollywood. Once on the ground, players will find themselves in an open world, tasked with surviving as zombies roam the streets of Los Angeles.

Deep Silver has not commented publicly on the leak, nor has the company confirmed plans to release Dead Island 2 this year. If the rumour proves true though, we should get an official announcement over the summer.

KitGuru Says: Dead Island 2 has had a turbulent development cycle, but it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel. If all goes well, we should have a new look at the game and a release date later this year. Will you be picking up Dying Light 2 when it eventually releases?
