Call of Duty will stay on PlayStation through 2023

With Microsoft set to acquire Activision Blizzard in the near future, there has been a lot of speculation around the future of Call of Duty on PlayStation consoles. At this point, Microsoft Gaming head, Phil Spencer, has confirmed plans to honour all current agreements, but what exactly does that mean? We’ll according to sources it means there will be another two years worth of Call of Duty on PlayStation at least. 

According to a report from Bloomberg, the next three Call of Duty games will be coming to PlayStation under Activision Blizzard’s current agreement with Sony. That deal covers the next Modern Warfare, which is due out this year, as well as the next Black Ops game in 2023. The deal also includes Call of Duty: Warzone 2, which is a rather unexpected title to hear about given that Warzone in its current form is treated as a live service that carries across each mainline Call of Duty title.

So if you are an avid Call of Duty player on PlayStation, you don’t really have to worry until 2024. From that point on though, anything is possible. At this point we’ve seen Microsoft take two approaches, maintaining multi-platform for the Minecraft series, while other major studios like Bethesda are now focusing on Xbox and PC exclusively. It is unclear which end of the spectrum Activision Blizzard will fall to should the Microsoft acquisition go through.

In a previous statement on the matter, Phil Spencer expressed a “desire” to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation. Unfortunately due to various laws, Microsoft can’t make any definitive statements on its plans for Activision Blizzard until the acquisition goes through, so we’ll know exactly what that means sometime in 2023.

KitGuru Says: I think keeping Call of Duty multi-platform is the best move here, it could even be a Trojan horse of sorts, tempting PlayStation players to switch to Xbox or PC to play the game through Game Pass rather than shelling out a full £69.99 each year.
