Blizzard’s upcoming survival game has been in development since 2017

In a surprise announcement last week, Blizzard revealed that it is working on a brand new IP. While the low-key nature of this reveal would usually indicate that development is very early on, it turns out that this survival game has been in the works for nearly five years.

During Blizzard's initial announcement, the studio revealed that its new IP is a survival game. After doing some digging, it seems that the project is being led by Craig Amai. As spotted by PCGamer, Amai's Linkedin shows that he left the World of Warcraft team back in 2017 to work on this untitled survival game, so there is already years of work behind this game.

Chances are, development progress has slowed a bit over 2020 and 2021, in part due to the pandemic and in part due to Activision Blizzard's internal issues. Still, Blizzard looking to push things along now with a number of job postings going live for this project – the game is also said to already be in a playable state.

Blizzard has revealed very little about this game officially, all we know is that it is a survival game and based on the early artwork revealed, there may be a magical portal between dimensions that may or may not play a role in the final game. We should see the game in action and learn much more about this new IP over the next couple of years though.

KitGuru Says: Aside from this, Blizzard is also rumoured to have one other major unannounced game in the works, alongside continued support for WoW, as well as development on Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. After a lengthy drought, it is looking like the next five years are going to be absolutely packed with new Blizzard games.
