Uncharted sequel all-but-confirmed as film surpasses expectations

The Uncharted film finally launched in cinemas last week after more than a decade of development issues, scheduling conflicts and creative differences. While critical reviews are somewhat mixed, it seems fans are enjoying the new conversion of Nathan Drake, as the film has surpassed expectations, all-but-guaranteeing a sequel is on its way.

In a report by Deadline, it was revealed that the uncharted film’s 4-day weekend launch surpassed expectations, with Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman releasing a memo saying:

“With over $100M in box office worldwide in just one weekend, and a 90% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncharted is a new hit movie franchise for the company.”

He continued, “The ensuing impact is proof once again of the unmatched cultural power of real movies. On the heels of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted is yet another blow to the theatrical naysayers and further proof of the efficacy of our model.”

Rothman concluded by saying “I want to thank all of the filmmakers, the wonderful cast and crew, and especially our friends at PlayStation Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment for their support. And of course, I want to thank each and every one of you for your creativity, dedication and belief.”

From the way that Rothman speaks of the film, as well as the fact that it has already made $139 million in just 4 days (on top of director Ruben Fleischer expressing his desires to make a sequel), it seems safe to assume that a sequel will be on its way in the not-too-distant future. It will be interesting to see how much the film makes when all is said and done.
