PlayStation has typically been known for being the home of single-player story-focused third person games. While this continues to be the case, the recent Bungie acquisition indicates their move towards live service titles. They have now doubled down on this, wanting to release almost a dozen such titles within the next few years.
As part of Sony’s FY2021 Q3 earnings report webcast, the console manufacturer claimed it has plans to launch 10 live service games by March 2026. For a company known for publishing single-player games, this expansion towards live service titles is interesting.
Of course, we have seen the push by many companies towards live service models, and Sony themselves have already taken part in this by acquiring Bungie for $3.6 Billion. Bungie of course is known for creating the Halo franchise, and most recently the successful live service MMO-lite Destiny 2.
Another game which is speculated to take the form of a live service title is Naughty Dog’s upcoming The Last of Us Faction 2 multiplayer game. While little is known officially about it, the company’s hiring history has suggested that the game will focus on live service elements with long-term support.
Launching 10 live service titles is an ambitious goal, as each will need devout care and attention to compete in an ever more competitive environment. If any company can do it, it is Sony, so we will have to wait and see.
