Keighley claims more major game studio acquisitions are on the way

We've seen a number of major acquisitions lately, with Microsoft announcing plans to buy Activision Blizzard, Bungie joining PlayStation Studios and Take Two acquiring Zynga. According to sources, there is more to come on this front too, with multiple other deals currently in the works. 

Following Sony's acquisition of Bungie this week, The Game Awards host, Geoff Keighley, one of the most connected people in the industry, claimed to have heard from multiple sources that “there are a few other big video game deals in the final stages of negotiations”. At the same time, we know that both Microsoft and Sony have publicly said they remain open to future acquisitions.

Typically, these acquisitions are negotiated in a small circle and protected by strict NDAs, which is why we didn't see leaks around Microsoft's Activision talks, or Sony's discussions with Bungie. However, given Keighley's position in the industry, it is possible he has heard something, but we have no way of knowing if the information is accurate.

Over the last year, acquisitions and mergers reached an $85 billion USD record, indicating an uptick in activity. Many analysts believe that the current trend of industry consolidation will continue, but very few major publishers have been named in rumours, with many believing the likes of Square Enix, EA or Capcom to be next on the sales block.
