The Nintendo Switch gets its own Wii Sports in the form of ‘Nintendo Switch Sports’

One of the reasons why the Wii became so popular was its inclusion of the game Wii Sports with every console – effectively showcasing the Wii’s hardware while also just being a highly fun game. 5 years on from the release of the Nintendo Switch, the console-handheld hybrid is set to get its own ‘Wii Sports’ in the form of the game ‘Nintendo Switch Sports’.

Announced during the recent Nintendo Direct (which also saw the company reveal Mario Kart 8 DLC, a new Xenoblade game, as well as a new Mario Strikers — to name a few), Nintendo Switch Sports is said to be “a sports collection to get the whole family moving!”

The game includes 6 sports activities, namely Soccer (Football), Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara (swordplay) – all of which use the Joy-Con’s motion controls allowing you to “curve your bowling ball, add spin to a tennis shot, or even use a Joy-Con with the included Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in a Soccer Shoot-Out.”

That is not all, as Nintendo has also promised a 7th sport being added for free later in ‘Fall’ through an update: Golf. While most of these sports were included in Wii Sports + Resort in some form or another, it will be interesting to see how different the experience is when using the Joy-Cons, which rely on an entirely different kind of motion sensor technology when compared to the Wii.

Nintendo Switch Sports will launch on the 29th of April for £30.99, but those who are yet to be convinced can partake in the game’s Online Play Test, which is set to take place between the 18th and 20th of February.

Wii Sports was a smash hit due in part to its pack-in nature, but for £30, Nintendo Switch Sports is somewhat of a hard sell. Then again, the company did release Wii Sports Resort back in 2009 as a premium product and it went on to sell more than 33 million copies, so we will simply have to wait and see.
