Elden Ring breaks Steam records despite poor PC performance

In the wake of the glowing reviews by gaming critics (which saw FromSoftware’s Elden Ring being thrust to the second place podium of the highest rated games of all time list) its worldwide launch today is being met with just as much enthusiasm. Despite severe PC issues, Elden Ring has broken FromSoftware’s previous Steam records multiple times over.

With the game peaking at 764,835 concurrent players, Elden Ring has blown all previous efforts by FromSoftware right out of the water. The studio’s previous game – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – only managed to max out at 125,315 peak concurrent players. The final game in the Dark Souls Trilogy meanwhile managed 129,975 players.

The reason for this huge leap in popularity is simple to observe, as FromSoftware have increased their prestige with every new release – with Sekiro being the studio’s second highest rated game of all time on Metacritic, and only a single point behind their highest rated: Bloodborne.

It is interesting to see Elden Ring sustaining such high player numbers on Steam as the game is suffering from PC-specific performance issues making it hard to play no matter how powerful your hardware.

While fans are clearly still playing the game, they have let their voices be heard, with opinions on Steam currently landing at a ‘Mixed’ across over 30,000 reviews. FromSoftware has been quick on the patches, however they somehow managed to break more things with it.

It is a shame to see what is seemingly an amazing game being limited by poor performance. If they manage to fix the issues, Elden Ring could possibly break one million concurrent players.
